There are two main categories here, older children's illustrated books and first chapter books.

For older illustrated books, keep the length to under 1000 words and think about how those words work with the images.

For chapter books, again the length varies from 3000-10000 words.

This is where you start to develop character and plot - think about ways to make both come to life as quickly as you can in your book.
